The Phagwara Municipal Corporation (MC) is undertaking significant steps towards urban reform and improving civic governance. Under the leadership of Municipal Commissioner Dr Akshita Gupta, who took charge three months ago, the MC aims to transform Phagwara into a model Municipal Corporation in Punjab.

Dr Gupta’s administration is focused on restoring public trust by ensuring transparent, accountable and citizen-centric governance, free from political influence.

A key priority for the new Commissioner is addressing illegal encroachments, particularly in the city’s congested marketplaces. A targeted campaign has been launched to reclaim public spaces, improve traffic flow, and enhance pedestrian and shopper accessibility. Efforts are also underway to allocate designated vending zones, such as in the Chhappati area, to regulate street vendors without disrupting public order.

Urban cleanliness and sanitation are being given high attention. The MC has stepped up efforts to clean choked drains ahead of the monsoon and repair damaged roads, which have been a long-standing concern for residents. Street lighting systems are being upgraded to ensure better visibility in poorly lit areas, and a citywide ban on plastic use is being enforced to support environmental sustainability.

In addition, the MC has initiated a sterilisation program for street dogs, in collaboration with veterinary teams, to address the increasing stray dog population.
