Jalandhar, July 11
To tackle the problems that normally arise during monsoon season, the Municipal Corporation has set up a control room with the helpline number 0181-2242587 for Jalandhar residents. The step has been taken with the aim of reaching out to the residents on the basis of a single phone call.
The residents, suffering from problems like sewerage blockage, water accumulation, uprooting of trees, spread of cholera and dengue can inform about their problems on the helpline.
As per the claims of the Municipal Corporation, special staff members will visit the areas to resolve the issues.
The MC has also claimed that proper arrangements have been made. “There is proper machinery, an evacuation programme has also been created. In case someone suffers due to flooding, arrangements for food and drinking water have also been made,” the officials claimed.
NGT instructs MC to ensure waste segregation at source. Sanitary inspectors and supervisors were called by the MC Commissioner today wherein he asked them to ensure that segregation under the solid waste management programme was being done at source. He said that the NGT had instructed the civic body in this regard.
Bulk waste generators have been asked to install CCTV cameras. Notably, a very small number of bulk waste generators in the city have been managing garbage on their own. According to Solid Waste Management Rules, they are required to manage wet waste by the process of composting.
Despite several campaigns, warnings and announcements about issuing challans to violators, no change has been observed on the ground.
Also, the MC often holds meetings with bulk generators of waste. Sometimes, MC health teams also hold surprise checking at various hotels and restaurants to check if norms are being followed.
However, these measures are proving insufficient in addressing the problem. The former chairman of Health and Sanitation Ad Hoc Committee had three years ago said that only 43 of 128 such bulk waste generators were making manure from wet waste.
