The External Affairs Ministry has started a service to inform the passport holders about the expiry date of their passports. Passport holders will get two text messages nine and seven months before the expiry date.

Raj Kumar Bali, Regional Passport Officer, Jalandhar, said, “Many passport holders forget to renew their passport on time. Since a person could not travel abroad unless his or her passport has a minimum validity of six months, people often miss the opportunity to travel abroad.”

Bali said they had come across several such cases where passport holders forget that they could not travel despite having a valid passport with a validity of less than six months.

Bali said the Ministry of External Affairs had decided to send text messages on the cell phone of a passport holder
