Training to Identif Congenital Defects

A one-day training session was organised under the guidance of Civil Surgeon Dr Gurmeet Lal for medical officers and staff nurses at delivery points to help identify congenital defects in new-borns. The training aimed to ensure comprehensive health check-ups at delivery points and before hospital discharge to allow early identification of any congenital defects. This would enable the affected child to benefit from free treatment under the Rashtriya Bal Swastha Karyakram (RBSK), which offers treatment for 30 types of child diseases. Dr Rishi Markanda, a pediatric specialist, emphasised the importance of screening for common congenital conditions, including Down syndrome, cleft lip, congenital heart diseases, and other abnormalities. The training encouraged healthcare professionals to prioritise primary care and timely intervention for new-borns, mothers, and families.

She emphasised that cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, but early detection can significantly improve survival rates. Dr Arshbir Kaur educated participants about lung, breast, and cervical cancers, while Dr Moninder Kaur and Dr Gurdev Bhatti raised awareness about oral cancer. The seminar also highlighted the importance of recognising symptoms early, as late-stage cancer reduces treatment options.
