Mobile phone seized from jail inmate, heroin from youth

In two separate incidents under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the police have registered cases following the recovery of a mobile phone from a jail inmate in Kapurthala and heroin from a youth in Mohali.

A search operation carried out by the jail security staff led to the recovery of a mobile phone from an undertrial prisoner.

The inmate, identified as Manjit Singh, alias Baba, resident of Chamiara village of Jalandhar, was lodged in the Central Jail, Kapurthala.

During a routine checking of inmates by the internal jail guard, officials found one mobile phone containing a SIM card and battery concealed in his clothes. Following the recovery, a case was registered against the inmate under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act and Prison Act, for unlawful possession of a communication device inside the jail premises.

In a separate operation the same day, a police party intercepted a suspicious individual while on a routine patrolling duty. The suspect, riding a motorcycle bearing registration number PB09 AP 1239, reportedly panicked upon seeing the police and attempted to dispose of a small polythene packet by throwing it at the roadside.

The individual was immediately apprehended by the police team and identified as Prakash Sharma, alias Sunny, of Lodhipur, district Bhojpur, Bihar, currently residing in Room No. 104, Avjot PG, in village Miherru. A search of the discarded packet led to the recovery of 8 gram of heroin. The suspect was taken into custody and booked under the NDPS Act.
