Jalandhar, July 27

Residents of several colonies adjoining the Model Town area, under the banner ‘Joint Action Committee’, today raised the long-pending issue of shifting of the garbage dump from their locality. They claimed they had been requesting the officials concerned to resolve the issue for years, but to no avail.

Jaswinder Singh Raja, a member of the committee, said they were literally living in a hell. “Come to the place, and no one will be able to stand for even five minutes. An unbearable powerful stench emanates from the area all the time, and reptile, mosquitoes and other insects have made the situation worse,” he said.

“No one can rob us of our right to live in clean and hygienic condition. We have not only taken up this matter with officials of the Municipal Corporation, but also with officials at the state-level. We have written to the Chief Minister, but still nothing has happened,” members of the committee said.

Col (Retd) Amrik Singh, President Kewal Vihar Cooperative Housing Maintenance Society said the garbage dump was located along the boundary of their housing complex and it had made the lives of the veteran soldiers and their families miserable.

He added: “Residents of the colony were already subjected to health risk due to presence of cremation ground. The garbage dump along the boundary of our colony, too, is causing adverse affect to the surrounding environment. Flies are everywhere and there is no respite from foul smell. The dump also attracts stray cattle which litter the entire surroundings.”

The members of the committee said if no action is taken now, they will form a wall by joining hands by standing outside the dump and would not allow anyone to throw the garbage.
