Patients suffering from prostate enlargement, as well as liver and bile-related conditions, now have access to newer, safer treatment options, experts at Patel Hospital have said.

Dr Swapan Sood, Head Urologist, Andrologist, Kidney Transplant and Robotic Surgeon at Patel Hospital, has introduced Rezūm Water Vapour Therapy for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common form of prostate enlargement. His colleague, Dr Varun Gupta, Gastroenterologist, Hepatologist and Therapeutic Endoscopist, has commenced use of the SpyGlass Direct Visualisation System for advanced hepatobiliary and pancreatic care.

Dr Sood, supported by Dr Sanyam Nandwani and Dr Kamal Sachdeva, said patients can now benefit from a day-care, non-surgical solution for prostate enlargement. "Rezūm uses the natural energy of steam to reduce excess prostate tissue, relieving urinary symptoms without cuts, stitches or general anaesthesia," he said.

Key advantages of Rezūm therapy include its minimally invasive nature, with no surgical incisions or stitches required, allowing patients to return home the same day. The treatment is also safe for high-risk patients and those unfit for conventional surgery. Importantly, it preserves sexual function, unlike many surgical alternatives.

Dr Sood added, "It is a game-changer for men suffering from prostate enlargement. By avoiding general anaesthesia, we can safely treat even high-risk patients who previously had no options. It is simple, effective and rapidly restores quality of life."

Dr Varun Gupta described the SpyGlass Direct Visualisation System as a breakthrough in diagnosing and treating complex bile duct, pancreatic and liver disorders. "Traditionally, ERCP provided only limited indirect imaging. SpyGlass, however, offers direct, high-resolution visualisation inside the ducts, enabling us to identify strictures, stones or tumours with unmatched accuracy."

He highlighted the key benefits of the SpyGlass system: "It delivers a clear, real-time view of bile and pancreatic ducts; facilitates precise stone fragmentation, biopsy, and treatment; detects complex conditions missed by conventional scopes; ensures quicker recovery and fewer complications; and allows comprehensive evaluation in a single session."

Dr Gupta added, "SpyGlass is transforming our approach to biliary and pancreatic diseases by providing direct access and clarity, enabling safer, faster and more accurate treatment."
