NGO writes to Gadkari urging construction of foot overbridges at PAP, Chugitti flyovers in Jalandhar
Citing frequent accidents at the PAP flyover and Chugitti bypass flyover, the Alfa Mahendru Foundation has urged Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari to approve the construction of foot overbridges at these locations on National Highway No. 44.
In a letter to the minister, the foundation’s president, Ramesh Mahendru, highlighted the urgent need for two foot overbridges —one near the Bhakra Beas Management Board Office and Guru Nanak Pura East at the PAP flyover and another near the Indian Oil Corporation Limited Office and Guru Govind Singh Avenue — close to Vidyadham and Akshardham Temple at the Chugitti bypass flyover.
The NGO pointed out that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had already installed foot overbridges for pedestrians’ safety at locations such as Lamba Pind Chowk and Radha Soami Satsang Beas near the Pathankot bypass. However, the absence of such infrastructure at the PAP and Chugitti flyovers had put pedestrians at risk, forcing them to cross the busy highway and leading to frequent accidents.
Mahendru emphasised that pedestrians, often in a hurry, attempt to cross the highway dangerously, resulting in crashes. The foundation urged immediate action, expressing hope that the minister would prioritise public safety and issue orders for the construction of foot overbridges without any delay.
