‘One judge one tree’ drive, state-level quiz competition mark World Environment Day

On the occasion of World Environment Day, judicial officers in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (SBS Nagar) and Kapurthala marked the day with impactful green initiatives promoting environmental conservation and sustainability.

In SBS Nagar, a massive plantation drive was held at the New Court Complex, where 120 saplings were planted under the guidance of the National Legal Services Authority and Punjab State Legal Services Authority, SAS Nagar. The event was led by Priya Sood, District and Sessions Judge-cum-Chairperson, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), SBS Nagar, and Dr Amandeep, Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM)-cum-Secretary, DLSA.

The drive saw enthusiastic participation from the legal fraternity including Baljinder Singh Maan, Aparajita Joshi, Gagandeep Kaur, Mahesh Kumar, Kompal Dhanjal, Simran Chalana, Tarandeep Kaur, Aanchal Dhir, and SS Kundra, President of the District Bar Association. Simultaneously, at the Sub-Divisional Court Complex in Balachaur, a similar activity was led by SDJM Luvjinder Kaur and Bar Association President HS Saini.

Speaking on the occasion, Priya Sood emphasised the importance of individual action in preserving the environment. “Each one of us has a role to play in safeguarding our planet for future generations,” she stated, urging citizens to engage in plantation drives, particularly during the monsoon season.

Meanwhile in Kapurthala, under the “One Judge – One Tree” campaign, a plantation drive was held at the District Court Complex. Harpal Singh, District and Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman, DLSA, Kapurthala, led the campaign and appealed to the public to take up tree planting as a civic responsibility. This drive is part of a larger month-long initiative in partnership with the Forest Department and NGOs to plant fruit-bearing and shade-providing trees across the district.

Prominent judicial officers including Sanjeev Joshi, Gurmeet Tiwana, Rana Kanwardeep Kaur Chahal, Rashmi Sharma, Suman Pathak, Hirdejit Singh, and Navjeetpal Kaur participated. The District Bar Association, led by President SS Malli, and Forest Department officials such as Jarnail Singh (DFO, Jalandhar) also joined hands in planting medicinal and ornamental saplings.

Additionally, Pushpa Gujral Science City, Kapurthala, hosted a State-Level Quiz Competition on the global theme “Ending Global Plastic Pollution”, engaging around 400 students. Winners included Krisha from DAV Public School, Ludhiana (Rs 5,000), Laxmi from Centenary Public School, Phillaur (Rs 3,000), and Anshmeet Singh from Government Senior Secondary School, Patiala (Rs 2,000).
