Pensioners protest over relocation of bank branch
Scores of pensioners staged a peaceful protest outside the Punjab & Sind Bank branch in Satnampura, opposing its proposed relocation to GT Road.
The move, which came to light through internal communications, sparked immediate backlash from senior citizens dependent on old-age, widow and disability pension.
Led by former municipal councillor Sarbjit Kaur, the demonstrators demanded that the bank reconsider its decision. They demanded that the bank authorities must pay attention to the problems faced by locals from the move.
Addressing the gathering, Sarbjit Kaur emphasised the historical and practical importance of the Satnampura branch, which has been serving the community for over five decades.
“This is the only public sector bank in the area, trusted by generations. Many customers have maintained accounts, lockers and fixed deposits here across three to four generations,” she said.
Sarbjit Kaur pointed out that the branch caters to over 1,000 pensioners from 35 villages and 13 wards surrounding the locality. Relocating to GT Road would create significant hardships, especially for elderly and physically challenged customers.
“If the bank is shifted, a stronger agitation will follow and the responsibility will lie with senior bank authorities,” she warned.
The protesters expressed their frustration over the lack of consultation and transparency regarding the decision.
They reiterated that accessibility and familiarity are vital for the bank’s elderly clientele.
Branch manager of Punjab & Sind Bank, Satnampura, assured the protestors that discussions with senior officials were on and the decision will be communicated to them soon. Following this assurance, the protest was called off temporarily.
Among the participants were pension beneficiaries including Rita Rani, Sonia, Narinder Pal Singh, Satnam Singh, Paramjit Kaur, Rattan Sharma, Kulwinder Kaur, Kamlesh Kumari, GS Grewal, Rajinder Kaur, Lakhvir Singh, Surinder Kaur, and many others from the local community.
