A fresh incident of theft has been reported in Phagwara, further intensifying concerns over the safety and security of local businesses. The latest case occurred at Vyas Ji Sanitary Store, located opposite the Sugar Mill, where unidentified miscreants allegedly broke in during the night and stole cash and merchandise.
According to store proprietor Jatinder Gupta, the intruders gained entry by damaging a rear section of the premises. Upon opening the store on Monday morning, he discovered that Rs 26,000 and a significant quantity of brass sanitary fittings were missing.
“This seems to have been a targeted act,” Gupta said, pointing out that the perpetrators appeared to have prior knowledge of the store’s layout and inventory. He estimated the total loss to be between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 2.5 lakh, including cash and stolen goods.
The incident has left local business owners rattled. In recent weeks, a spate of similar thefts has raised questions about the adequacy of night-time security and police vigilance in commercial zones. Several shopkeepers have called for increased patrolling and installation of surveillance systems in vulnerable areas.
While investigations into the theft are reportedly underway, no formal statement has yet been issued by the police. Traders and residents alike are urging the authorities to step up preventive measures and ensure timely action to deter further crimes.
Community leaders have also emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts between citizens and law enforcement to restore public confidence and maintain a secure business environment.
