MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to rename “Veer Bal Diwas” as “Sahibzade Shahadat Diwas” in alignment with the sentiments of the Sikh community.
The day, instituted in 2022 by the government, commemorates the martyrdom of the four Sahibzade, the sons of Sri Guru Gobind Singh, whose unparalleled sacrifice is revered across the Sikh faith.
In his communication to the Prime Minister, Seechewal expressed gratitude for the government’s national-level recognition of the Sahibzades’ martyrdom, describing the step as a significant gesture of respect toward the Sikh history. He noted that several Sikh organisations had approached Sri Akal Takht Sahib with appeals to revisit the nomenclature of the observance, following which the highest Sikh temporal authority advised MPs from Punjab to take up the concern with the Union Government.
Citing the need to reflect the community’s spiritual and emotional attachment to the legacy of the Sahibzade, Seechewal requested that the government correct the name to “Sahibzade Shahadat Diwas.” He stressed that the proposed title more accurately represents the solemnity and sacredness associated with the martyrdom, and urged that the change be implemented before the upcoming anniversary.
Expressing confidence in the Prime Minister’s understanding of the matter’s sensitivity, the MP appealed for timely action to uphold the religious sentiments of the Sikh community while honouring the historic sacrifice of the Sahibzade.
