The police today claimed to have busted a gang involved in stealing and recycling motorcycles in the city. The operation has led to the arrest of two persons and the recovery of Rs 70,000 in cash. Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma revealed that the cops acted on a tip-off about a gang engaged in motorcycle theft and resale operations. Following the information, police apprehended Rohit Kumar, a long-time suspect in motorcycle thefts, from Ghas Mandi Chowk.
Rohit Kumar, a resident of Tilak Nagar, was arrested under FIR dated August 21, at Division No. 5 police station.
During interrogation, Rohit Kumar admitted to selling stolen motorcycles to a local scrap dealer, Sumit alias Shammi, who resides in New Dashmesh Nagar. Based on this information, the police arrested Sumit. Further investigations revealed that Sumit used to dismantle the stolen motorcycles and sell the parts to other scrap dealers. Police recovered Rs 70,000 from Sumit’s residence, which is believed to be the proceeds earned from selling motorcycle parts. Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma stated that investigation is in progress and additional details will be provided as they emerge.
