In a major breakthrough, the Jalandhar Rural Police have arrested the main accused in a shooting incident that had claimed a life during a wedding celebration at Goraya village. The operation also led to the recovery of the revolver used in the fatal shooting at an NRI’s function at Chak Des Raj village.

The accused has been identified as Hariman Singh, son of Arvinder Singh, a resident of Gorayan village. The police investigation found that the accused fired three shots during the celebration, with the first shot hitting Paramjit Singh, a resident of Chak Des Raj village, resulting in his death. Speaking to the media, Jalandhar Rural SSP Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh said that on February 22, ASI Subhash Kumar, Dhutela police post in-charge, got information about a shooting incident that took place on February 17. “Around 10 pm, during the wedding celebration of an NRI family at Chak Des Raj village, the accused fired multiple shots in complete violation of government prohibitions on aerial firing,” said Khakh.

During initial questioning, the accused revealed details about the incident that was captured on camera and subsequently circulated on social media platforms. “Despite strict regulations banning aerial firing at public gatherings, the accused recklessly endangered numerous guests present at the function,” the SSP stated.

Further investigation exposed a cover-up attempt involving five individuals, who deliberately concealed evidence by cremating the victim’s body without getting the mandatory post-mortem examination conducted. The five have been identified as Rachpal Singh (NRI), Sukhjit Sahota and Bhupinder Singh from the same village, along with Satinder Singh of Ladia village and Makhan Singh, currently residing in the USA. A case had been registered while the accused was arrested on February 25 and produced before the Judicial Magistrate in Phillaur for taking him into police remand.

“We are thoroughly investigating the source of the illegal weapon and working diligently to apprehend all accomplices involved in this case,” the SSP added.
