DSP Ram Lal is going to retire on April 30. He had played his last National Tent Pegging Championship that was held recently in Jalandhar. He is the recipient of several medals in national and international riders. Ram Lal is one of the most experienced of the PAP team. He started playing at the age of 22 and has 35 years of experience in tent pegging. Before his last run was started in Jalandhar, a commentary in his respect was also made by the experienced riders.

For Ram Lal, the connection and love he has held with horses over all these decades is unparalleled. “A horse becomes a rider's best friend. Rider and his horse understand each other. The chemistry between both of them is incredible,” he said.

There should be an understanding between the rider and the horse, only then will coordination follow, which is essential in tent pegging,” he added.

Inspector Youngbir Singh has been taking part in national-level tournaments since 1990. He has won several medals at the national level events.

Recently, DIG Inderbir Singh, astride the mare “Innocent Affair”, had also won the medal in Hacks open event in the same championship.

Along with him, Head Constable Gurtej Singh, astride horse Prince, won bronze in show jumping event. Head Constable Sandeep Singh also won a silver in show jumping on his horse Akash.

According to experts associated with the game, the tent pegging originated when Army personnel on their horses used to gallop to tents of enemies and pluck out their pegs, causing the tents to collapse on them and causing havoc and terror in the camp. It used to be an important war tactic.”
