On the second day of the 28th Purewal Games of Hakimpur, wrestlers competed and tried their best for seven wrestling titles today. Three wrestlers from Iran, three from Canada and one from Brazil also participated.
The wrestling competitions, organised by the Purewal brothers and the Purewal Sports Club, were held at the Indoor Multipurpose Hall of Amardeep Shergill Memorial College, Mukandpur, under the supervision of former chief coach of India PR Sondhi.
Around 200 wrestlers participated in the 'Mahabharat Kesari' (Men and Women), 'Sher-e-Hind', 'Aftab-e-Hind', 'Sitar-e-Hind', 'Mahabharat Kumari' and 'Punjab Kumar'.
As per the announcement made by sports writer Principal Sarwan Singh on the occasion of the Paris Olympics, it was decided to honour Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat where she would be given a gold medal of 23 gram. Chief organiser Gurjit Singh Purewal said since Phogat could not be available due to her busy schedule, now this award would be given to her in Chandigarh in the coming days.
Purewal said the winners of seven wrestling titles were honoured with cash prize of more than Rs 10 lakh, Gurj and almonds. The kabaddi open matches were postponed due to rain.
