In a major relief for patients suffering from knee and hip joint problems, Civil Hospital, Hoshiarpur, is now offering free knee and hip replacement surgeries under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. This initiative removes the need for residents to travel to major cities or private hospitals and spend lakhs on treatment.

This development marks a significant transformation in government healthcare services, proving that surgical care is now accessible to the common citizen. It also strengthens public trust in government health infrastructure, demonstrating that, with skilled doctors and adequate support, state-run hospitals can deliver world-class treatment.

According to Dr Swati, Senior Medical Officer and In-charge of Civil Hospital, a dedicated team led by orthopaedic specialist Dr Amarpreet Singh has successfully conducted over 23 knee replacements and more than 10 hip joint replacements in the past two years. These procedures have been carried out entirely free of cost for eligible patients under the Punjab Government’s health scheme.

“Earlier, people had to spend huge amounts at private or corporate hospitals in cities like Chandigarh, Ludhiana or Delhi for joint replacements. But now, we are conducting the same surgeries with full success, modern facilities, and at no cost to the patient,” said Dr Swati.

Dr Amarpreet Singh told The Tribune that the implanted knee joints are fully flexible, allowing patients to squat or even ride a bicycle post-recovery. “The state-of-the-art operation theatre at Civil Hospital Hoshiarpur has all the advanced facilities required for such procedures,” he said.

He further explained that patients are able to walk just one day after surgery and are typically discharged within a week, following proper physiotherapy and rehabilitation. “Our aim is to make high-quality orthopaedic care accessible to everyone, especially those who cannot afford costly private treatment,” Dr Amarpreet added.

He urged residents of Hoshiarpur and surrounding areas to make full use of the free services, encouraging those with bone-related ailments, particularly knee and hip joint issues, to consult him every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Surgeries are conducted on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. “All patients treated so far, including several who had both knees replaced, are doing well and have returned to normal life,” he said.

Dr Swati praised Dr Amarpreet and his team for their dedication and excellent work. “It is a proud moment for Civil Hospital Hoshiarpur. This facility is now matching the standards of reputed hospitals in major cities,” she added.
