Jalandhar residents oppose proposed garbage dump near 66ft road
Jalandhar, February 17
Residents residing along the 66ft road opposed the Municipal Corporation’s proposal to establish a garbage dump in their vicinity.
Residents gathered outside Jalandhar Heights II and held a protest against the proposed plan. The protest was organised under the banner of the United Residents’ Forum.
Led by Amit Taneja, president of the forum, along with general secretary Karan Kharbanda, Dinesh Singh, and Maj Gen Arun Khanna (retd), the residents expressed concern over the potential health and safety hazards posed by the proposed garbage dump.
Pointing towards the proposed site situated mere 100 yards from a hospital and opposite Gurdwara Sahib, the residents emphasised the importance of safeguarding public health and preserving the sanctity of religious sites. Highlighting the significant risks associated with the accumulation of waste near healthcare facilities, the residents underscored the adverse impact on patients’ well-being.
Moreover, they drew attention to the environmental and health implications for approximately 2,00,000 residents residing in the vicinity, particularly vulnerable groups such as children, elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions.
Pointing towards the existing government land at Jamsher village designated for waste management purpose, the residents advocated for the relocation of the proposed garbage dump to mitigate risks.
“The decision to establish a garbage dump near the 66ft road is an inhumane and insensitive move by the district administration. We urge the authorities to reverse this proposal, else we will be forced to intensify our protest,” said Amit Taneja, adding that they had now collectively decided to gherao the residents of MLAs and MPs.
