Retired cop killed in accident with 'drunk' policeman’s car
A retired ASI died in an accident this evening when a car hit the activa scooter he was riding near Begowal in Kapurthala. The car, a Brezza (No. Punjab-06BG-0993), was driven by Sub Inspector Rajinder Singh, a serving police officer from Batala, who was reportedly intoxicated at the time of the incident.
The accident occurred when Sub Inspector Rajinder Singh, driving from Begowal towards Nadala, collided with the Activa scooter being ridden by former ASI Nirmal Singh, a resident of village Dolowal. Nirmal, who was on his way home with milk, died on the spot. The Brezza car also struck another person riding a scooter, leaving both two-wheeler riders seriously injured.
After hitting Nirmal’s activa, the car lost control and overturned in the fields by the roadside. The visibly inebriated SI was found lying on the roadside after the car crash. Witnesses, angered by the incident, beat the drunk officer. Police arrived at the scene to calm the crowd and took the accused officer to a local hospital for treatment.
Videos of the incident quickly went viral on social media, showing witnesses shouting at the intoxicated cop and attempting to wake him up. Begowal Police Station SHO Ramandeep Kumar confirmed that the former ASI had died in the accident, and the investigation is ongoing. The police have not yet filed a formal case, but action will be taken based on the results of the investigation, said DSP Bholath, Karnail Singh.
The investigation into the accident continues, with authorities confirming one death so far and further action to follow.
