Life after 60 is often called the “second innings”, but for many senior citizens, these years are filled with challenges of loneliness, isolation, and lack of purpose. In an inspiring effort to address these concerns, Sangeeta Mittal, Director, CSR, Sonalika Group of Industries, a renowned social activist and spiritual guide, has established Sanjeevani Sharnam — a unique place for the elderly to collectively enjoy thei

Speaking to The Tribune, Mittal explained the heart behind this initiative. “The idea behind Sanjeevani Sharnam is to create a supportive community for senior citizens, aged 60 plus, where they can engage in meaningful activities, socialise, and lead a fulfilling life. As a social activist and spiritual guide, I’ve seen many elderly individuals facing loneliness, isolation, and a lack of purpose. Sanjeevani Sharnam aims to address these challenges by providing a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment that fosters physical, emotional, and mental well-being,” she said.

The very name of the initiative reflects its vision. Explaining why she chose this name, Mittal shared, “The name ‘Sanjeevani Sharnam’ is inspired by the concept of Sanjeevani, which means ‘life-giving’ or ‘revitalising’. I wanted to create a space that would breathe new life into the lives of senior citizens, providing them with a sense of purpose, belonging, and rejuvenation. ‘Sharnam’ means refuge or shelter, reflecting our commitment to creating a safe haven where seniors can find comfort, support, and companionship.”

At Sanjeevani Sharnam, the focus is not only on providing a roof and care, but on building a vibrant community where elderly persons can celebrate life together. The space brings senior citizens together for yoga, meditation, storytelling, art sessions, cultural evenings, and spiritual discussions. The idea is to make every evening joyful and meaningful, while also promoting healthy habits and emotional strength.

The initiative has already made a deep impact on its participants. As Mittal proudly pointed out, “Sanjeevani Sharnam has had a profoundly positive impact on our participants. By engaging in various activities, such as yoga, meditation, art, and discussions, seniors have reported improved physical and mental health, increased social connections, and a renewed sense of purpose. Our programme has also helped reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, promoting overall well-being and happiness.”

The most heart-warming part, she says, is watching seniors rediscover laughter and companionship. “Witnessing the transformation in our participants is truly rewarding, and we’re committed to continuing this work,” Mittal added.

Unlike old-age homes, Sanjeevani Sharnam does not project life after 60 as a period of decline. Instead, it nurtures the belief that these years can be celebrated with dignity and joy. Seniors are encouraged to share their experiences, knowledge, and wisdom with each other and the younger generation. This not only enriches their lives, but also builds bridges between generations.

Mittal believes that society must change its approach towards the elderly. “We need to see our seniors as assets, not as burdens. They carry immense knowledge, life lessons, and cultural richness. All they need is a respectful environment and a community that values them,” she emphasised.

With its unique approach, Sanjeevani Sharnam has emerged as a model that can be replicated in other parts of the country. As families become smaller and urban life more fast-paced, such community-driven initiatives are likely to play a crucial role in supporting senior citizens.

Mittal’s vision is to expand the reach of Sanjeevani Sharnam and inspire more people to think about the dignity and happiness of the elderly. “Our seniors deserve to live their golden years with pride, companionship, and joy. Sanjeevani Sharnam is just a step towards making that dream a reality,” she said.

Sanjeevani Sharnam stands as more than just a refuge — it is a celebration of life’s second innings. With its blend of care, companionship, and creativity, it offers senior citizens a chance to rediscover themselves and to enjoy every evening together, in the true spirit of community and belonging.
