Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma today asked all Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) to submit detailed estimates on works to control floods in their respective subdivisions.
Chairing a meeting at his office here to review flood-preparation arrangements, the Deputy Commissioner said: “Heavy snowfall in hills during the ongoing winter season was an alarm bell for all of us as it could create trouble when the snow melts in the summer.”
He said since the district had already witnessed floods due to breach on banks of the Sutlej in the previous year, the administration had to be cautious this year too. Sharma said a detailed estimate of flood protection had to be submitted to the state government so that the works were completed before the advent of the monsoon season.
The Deputy Commissioner asked SDMs to minutely prepare the detailed estimates of flood protection works for areas on the banks of the Sutlej. He said it would help in ensuring a foolproof mechanism to prevent the loss of life, property or cattle in the monsoons.
Sharma said proposals must incorporate works of strengthening embankments of the river and the straightening/strengthening of embankments constructed during the floods in 2019.
The Deputy Commissioner said the estimates would be sent to the state government for its approval and subsequently, the work would be kicked off on a war footing. He told the officers that any sort of callousness in the matter was totally unwarranted and undesirable. Sharma said he would be personally overseeing the works regularly for their timely completion.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Jasbir Singh, SDMs Amit Kumar, Rahul Sindhu, Dr Sanjiv Sharma and Vineet Kumar, Assistant Commissioner Hardeep Singh, District Revenue Officer Jashanjit Singh, Executive Engineers Ajit Singh Rai and Ram Rattan were among those others present.
