Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Singh Seechewal has called for more allocation of funds towards sports infrastructure. In a recent statement, Seechewal congratulated athletes for their stellar performance in the Paris Olympics, noting their role in elevating the country’s prestige on the global stage.
Seechewal highlighted Punjab’s strong tradition in Olympics, citing the example of Sansarpur village, where eight athletes won medals.
Criticising the current distribution of sports budgets, Seechewal pointed out that Punjab received only Rs 65 crore despite sending around 16 athletes to the Olympics as compared to Rs 650 crore allocated to another state with just two Olympic participants.
He called for equitable distribution of sports funding and emphasised that sports should remain free of political influence.
With a focus on improving sports facilities, Seechewal argued for the construction of modern hockey stadiums in Punjab. He urged the Sports Ministry to plan for the 2032 Olympics suggesting that early preparation could boost India’s chances of achieving significant success.
