Seechewal leaves Parliament session to help restore farmers' fields
Says the first two days of the session wasted due to disruption
Leaving the winter session of Parliament aside, Rajya Sabha member Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal has dedicated himself to restoring fields of the flood-affected farmers in the mand region. Sant Seechewal stated that the first two days of the session were wasted due to disruption.
“According to an estimate, each day of the Parliament session costs over Rs 10 crore. The disruption over two days caused a loss of nearly Rs 20 crore of public money, yet no party seems concerned,” he said. Earlier, Sant Seechewal had written to the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, urging him to take steps to prevent waste of taxpayers’ money caused by the parliamentary deadlock
At Sangra village in the Mand area, wheat sowing has begun on 1.5-acre field of Granthi Kabal Singh. The family owns five acres of land, but it is covered with sand and silt due to flooding. Satinder Singh Bagga, a member of Sant Seechewal’s team, arranged tractors and free diesel to level the land and make fields cultivable again.
At Baupur Kadeem village, a thick layer of sand had settled on land belonging to farmer Major Singh. To level this land, an excavator and tractors have been deployed. Hard soil is being dug up to depth of four feet, refilled with sand, and finally covered again with topsoil.
Sant Seechewal said the restoration work on fields of the flood-affected farmers was continuing at a war footing even today. For farmers whose land has already been levelled, wheat sowing has been completed. Farmers in the region thanked Sant Seechewal’s efforts as 250 acres of land had already been levelled and wheat sowing completed. — OC
