In a tragic incident on Monday, a sewerman was struck by a car while performing sewer maintenance duties on Ladowali Road. The entire episode was captured on CCTV footage.

In response to the incident, members of the Safai Karamchari Union staged a large dharna (protest) and expressed strong resentment over what they described as negligence and lack of protection for workers.

The union demanded that the Municipal Corporation immediately take responsibility for the injured worker’s medical treatment. “We also demand that sewermen recruited on a contractual basis be regularised. Their current wages are extremely low,” said union leader Sunny Sahota. He further warned that the union would halt all sanitation work if the injured worker’s condition worsens.

Municipal Commissioner Sandeep Rishi visited the site to assess the situation and assured union members that the Corporation would bear the full cost of the injured worker’s medical treatment. “The man has been seriously injured and it will take him some time to recover,” Sahota added.
