Shobha yatra marks Guru Ravidas Jayanti

Lok Sabha MP Chaudhary Santokh Singh, MLAs Sushil Kumar Rinku and Chaudhary Surinder Singh, Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma and Commissioner of Police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar were part of the sea of devotees who took part in the shobha yatra to mark the Parkash Purb of Guru Ravidas.

The MP, MLAs and officials said the yatra was a tradition of the district and was being organised for more than eight decades. The rich legacy was being continued by city residents.

They said Guru Ravidas had propagated the message of carving out an egalitarian society and it was the need of the hour to follow the message.

Felicitating people on the occasion, they urged people to tread the path shown by Guru Ravidas. They also lauded the role played by various social organisations to make the yatra a huge success.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Jasbir Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Harpreet Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police HS Bhalla were among those others present.

Special tableau

A special tableau in the yatra, amid heavy security, was dedicated to the Constitution. Featuring a copy of the Constitution and a portrait of Dr BR Ambedkar, the decked up tableau signified the importance of the venerated Dalit leader, who is the father of the Indian Constitution, and the ethos he represent in upholding the social justice and equality of the nation.

Meanwhile, the stage is set for a state-level function being organised by the state government to mark the Parkash Purb on February 9. Punjab Social Justice Minister Sadhu Singh Dharamsot would preside over the function being organised at the Guru Ravidas Bhawan on Link Road. The function would also be attended by all MPs and MLAs, besides thousands of devotees. The district administration, led by the Deputy Commissioner and the Commissioner of Police, gave final touches to the arrangements for the mega event. They also assigned duties to officers of the civil and police administration. Both officers have asked the officials to perform their duty diligently, adding that any sort of callousness was totally unwarranted and undesirable.
