A local court on Thursday sent Punjabi singer Hassan Manak alias Hassan Khan to judicial remand of 14 days in connection with a case involving allegations of cheating, fraud and sexual assault lodged by a UK-based NRI woman. The accused was produced before the Judicial Magistrate, Phagwara, who ordered his remand following preliminary interrogation by police officials.
According to police sources, the remand follows a detailed complaint filed earlier this year by Parvinder Kaur, mother of the victim Jaspreet Kaur, a Non-Resident Indian residing in the United Kingdom. The complaint, addressed to the Superintendent of Police, Phagwara, seeks registration of an FIR against Hassan Manak and several of his family members.
The complainant alleged that the accused befriended her daughter on Instagram during his visit to England, proposed marriage, and concealed his marital status and religious identity. The accused allegedly misrepresented himself as a single Sikh while being married to Mandeep Kaur, with a pending domestic violence case in Bathinda courts.
The complaint further claimed that under the false pretext of marriage, Manak and his family extracted Rs 22-25 lakh from the victim's family in the form of wedding-related expense.
The victim later alleged that the accused compelled her to leave India immediately, warning that police might arrest her. She departed for London from Amritsar Airport, accompanied by the accused and his brother, during which £1,800 was reportedly stolen from her purse.
