The government has received credible reports about some private operators allegedly collecting personal information of people in an illegal manner.

Issuing a warning in this regard, Deputy Commissioner Ashika Jain today stated that collecting or using personal information without consent is a punishable offense under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act). She said that the local police have been directed to take strict punitive action against those involved in such illegal activities.

She informed that it has also come to notice that many individuals who shared their information have fallen victim to scams and banking frauds, including cases of money laundering, misuse of phone numbers, and OTP fraud.

The Deputy Commissioner said that joint teams of SDMs and police will be formed to conduct surprise inspections in sub-divisions to curb these activities. If any unauthorised person is found collecting data illegally, strict action will be taken against them.
