Talwara Civil Society protests against Shah’s remarks
Civil Society Talwara staged a protest against the recent controversial remarks made by Home Minister Amit Shah regarding Dr BR Ambedkar in Parliament. The demonstration, held at Maharana Pratap Chowk, was spearheaded by leaders from various organisations, including Kundan Lal and Yugraj Singh of the Revolutionary Marxist Party of India (RMPI), Urban Pradhan Bodhraj and Amandeep Happy from the Congress, Raj Kamal Singh Bittu of Shri Guru Ravidas Sabha, Bhagwan Das Pratap Chowk, Mela Ram from the Pensioners Association, and Raj Kumar and Amit Gill from the Valmik Sabha.
During the protest, Civil Society Talwara criticised Shah’s statement, accusing the BJP of being anti-Constitution. Leaders such as Gyan Singh Gupta, Mulkh Raj, Ramesh Sahota, Jarnail Singh Jaila, Sathi Pancham Lal, and KK Sharma alleged that the BJP, driven by a communal and fascist ideology, aims to dismantle the constitutional values of the country.
Speakers emphasised that the Constitution drafted by Dr Ambedkar upholds the principles of secularism and equality. However, they accused the BJP government of diverting attention from pressing public issues like inflation, unemployment, corruption, and poverty while undermining the legacy of figures who united the nation. They viewed Shah’s remarks as an attack on justice, democracy, federalism and secularism, deeply hurting those who value these ideals.
The protestors demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi apologise to the public and called for Amit Shah’s resignation. The event concluded with the burning of an effigy of Amit Shah to symbolise their discontent.
