The police in Kapurthala and Phagwara arrested three persons and seized heroin, intoxicants and a motorcycle in two separate operations carried out during routine patrol and naka checking, officials said on Thursday.
In the first case, ASI Amarjit Singh of Kapurthala, while on patrol duty along with a police party under daily checking, laid a naka near Banwalipur, Rampur and New Village areas. During the operation, the team spotted a youth approaching on a motorcycle bearing registration number PB08-BW-4809. On noticing the police, the rider allegedly panicked and threw a black, wax-sealed packet from the pocket of his pyjama into nearby grass before attempting to flee.
The police overpowered him on suspicion and checked the discarded packet, which was found to contain 250 orange-coloured intoxicating capsules. The accused, identified as Rachhoda Chahal, resident of City Lambra, Jalandhar, was taken into custody. The motorcycle used in the offence was also seized. A case under Sections 21, 61, and 85 of the NDPS Act was registered against him.
In another operation in Phagwara, ASI Rakesh Kumar and his team were patrolling near Wahian Chowk when they spotted a youth from village Bhanoki walking hurriedly towards the road. On seeing the police, he allegedly became nervous and attempted to slip away after throwing a transparent wax-sealed packet to one side.
The accused was apprehended and identified as Sarab Mahimi, alias Gunna, resident of Hadiabad, Phagwara. On checking the thrown packet, the police recovered 7 gram of heroin, leading to registration of a case under the NDPS Act.
During interrogation, Sarab Mahimi reportedly disclosed that he had purchased the heroin from Anmol Kaler, resident of village Khera, Satnampura, Phagwara. Acting on this, the police added relevant charges under Sections 29, 61, and 85 of the NDPS Act and arrested Anmol Kaler. From him, the police recovered an additional 8 gram of heroin, officials said.
The police said all three accused have been arrested and further investigation is underway to trace the supply chain and any possible links to wider narcotics networks.
