Hoshiarpur: Mukerian police have booked five persons for allegedly duping three persons of Rs8.55 lakh on the pretext of sending them abroad in separate cases. In the first case, Savinder Singh, a resident of Dana Mandi, Mukerian, had lodged a complaint with the SSP that travel agents, identified as Balwinder Singh and Jagdish Singh, both residents of New Patel Nagar, Patiala, had allegedly taken Rs2.30 lakh from him to send his son Manpreet and a relative, Maninder, to Dubai. But, the accused neither sent them abroad nor returned their money. In another complaint, Parik Bakshi, a resident of Nayan Bhangala, complained to the SSP that travel agents Ramandeep Singh, a resident of Chhajju Majra, SAS Nagar, Sukhdeep Singh, a resident of Naya Bhangala, and Ranveer Singh of Bhattian Rajputan village, took Rs6.25 lakh for sending him to Canada. But the accused neither sent him abroad nor returned his money. OC

Two booked for abetting suicide

Hoshiarpur: A woman after being allegedly harassed by her daughter-in-law and her mother ended her life by consuming poison here on Saturday. On the complaint of the victim’s husband, Hajipur police have registered a case against a mother-daughter duo for abetting suicide. Satwinder Singh, a resident of Kolian village, lodged a complaint with the police that he worked as a driver and had gone to Ludhiana. He was informed by his neighbour that his daughter-in-law Manjeet Kaur along with her mother Gurmeet was quarrelling with his wife Kashmir Kaur. His wife consumed some poisonous substance. She was rushed to a hospital where she died. OC

45 organisations to support SSM

Jalandhar: As many as 45 key organisations on Sunday announced support to the Samyukta Samaaj Morcha (SSM) formed by farmer outfits. During a gathering held at the Desh Bhagat Yadgaar Hall here, prominent leaders said the party had been formed to provide a political alternative to the people of the state. Leader Kulwant Singh Sandhu said prominent Haryana farmer leader Gurnam Singh Charuni would also join it. TNS

Liquor seized, smuggler held

Hoshiarpur: Garhdiwala police arrested a smuggler and recovered 18,750 ml of liquor from him here on Saturday. The accused has been identified as Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopi, a resident of Dhoot Kalan. He has been booked under relevant sections of the Excise Act. OC

One booked on cheating charge

Hoshiarpur: A person has been booked by the Garhshankar police station for cheating. Mehnga Singh, a resident of Dhanaula Mandi village in Barnala district, had lodged a complaint with the police that Kuljeet Singh, a resident of Ring Road, Bajwara, had made an agreement with him to sell a piece of land, but did not get the registry done.
