Told to stop, driver rams car into cop at naka, flees

Jalandhar, January 12

A speeding car hit a cop at a hi-tech naka at Kanvan Pattan village in Shahkot here on Wednesday morning. The vehicle dragged him for a considerable distance, before crashing into a divider on the highway.

The cop, identified as ASI Surjit Singh, fell on the divider and suffered serious injured. The car driver fled the spot after the incident.

While the police have traced the car, the suspect is yet to be nabbed. The car has the registration number of Moga.

A CCTV footage of the incident was released today. In the footage, the driver can be seen ramming his vehicle into the cop. The driver dragged him for some distance before crashing into a divider.

When the cop signalled the vehicle to stop for checking, the driver rammed the vehicle into him. After the ASI fell off the vehicle, the car driver rammed the vehicle into a railing on the highway.

The suspect fled the spot, leaving the cop injured. The victim was taken to the Shahkot Civil Hospital. Owing to his serious condition, the ASI was later referred to DMC, Ludhiana.

A resident of Bajwa Kalan, ASI Surjit Singh is posted at the Shahkot police station in Jalandhar.

Sukhjit Singh, Shahkot SHO, said: “The suspect came to meet his relatives in Shahkot. The vehicle has been traced. The statement of the ASI was recorded this morning. The driver will be arrested soon and strict action will be taken against him.” A case was registered against the suspect on Friday.
