Training camp prepares farmers for kharif crops

To provide technical information to farmers about the kharif crops, a district-level training camp was organised by the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department at Dana Mandi, Kartarpur, today in which more than 1,500 farmers participated.

Punjab Minister for Horticulture and Defence Services Welfare Mohinder Bhagat attended the fair as the chief guest. The fair was inaugurated by Kartarpur MLA, Balkar Singh.

Addressing the farmers, Bhagat said the government was strengthening agriculture through various schemes. He urged farmers to get out of the crop rotation cycle and diversify, stressing that alternative farming was the need of the hour. The minister also urged farmers to use seeds, fertilisers and medicines recommended only by experts of the Agriculture Department. He also urged them to desist from burning crop residues.

Constituency MLA Balkar Singh said farmers need to come forward to protect the environment. Dilbagh Singh, Joint Director, Agriculture, said that as per the instructions of the government, Rs 20,01,000 has been provided to farmers through DBT.

Dr Randhir Singh Thakur, Chief Agriculture Officer, said during this kharif season, 45,000 hectares of land will be brought under maize, 15,000 hectares under basmati, and 12,500 hectares under sugarcane. He said that for Kharif 2025, different types of quality seeds for crops like maize, paddy, basmati, pulses are being arranged for the farmers.

Experts from Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Nurmahal, provided information about the cultivation of kharif crops and diseases. to more than 1,500 farmers. Stalls of produce were also set up by farmers and an exhibition of machinery was held.
