Tricolour missing from flagpole for years
Once a proud symbol of patriotism and national pride, the towering 105-ft flagpole near the Rest House along the National Highway in Phagwara now stands bare, its Tricolour missing for years.
Installed with much fanfare on August 5, 2015, by former Local Bodies Minister Anil Joshi, the flagpole was envisioned as a landmark to instil nationalism and attract tourists. A sum of Rs 13 lakh was spent on the project and for several years, the national flag fluttered proudly atop the structure. However, since 2018, the pole has remained mostly flagless, with as many as 36 flags either torn or blown away due to extreme weather conditions.
The last flag was hoisted on August 14 last year, ahead of Independence Day, but it, too, did not last long. Despite repeated appeals from residents to use wind-resistant fabric to withstand the elements, no concrete action has been taken.
When contacted by The Tribune, Phagwara Municipal Corporation Commissioner Dr Akshita Gupta assured that steps would be taken to restore the flag. “We will examine the case and take all necessary measures to keep the spirit of patriotism and nationalism alive in Phagwara,” she said.
For now, the towering structure remains a stark reminder of neglect, waiting for the day when the Tricolour will once again soar high in the sky.
