Two booked for brewing liquor

Shahkot: The Shahkot police booked two persons on the charge of brewing illicit liquor. Investigating Officer (IO) Harbhajan Lal said the suspects had been identified as Mangal Singh, alias Mangi, a resident of Bau Pur village, and his unidentified accomplice. The IO said the suspects were brewing illicit liquor on the brink of Sutlej river near Bau Pur village. He said on seeing a police party they fled the spot leaving behind 300-litre lahan, 53 bottles of illicit liquor, and utensils used for brewing the liquor. A case under the Excise Act has been registered against the suspects. OC

Bid to encroach land: 4 booked

Shahkot: The police on Thursday booked four persons, including a woman, on the charge of attempt to encroach land. The accused have been identified as Surindar Kaur, Harjindar Singh, Sudagar Singh and Babby, all residents of Punia village. Swaran Singh, a resident of Chak Gadai Pur village, complained to the police that the accused ploughed his fields with the intention to encroach on land. A case under Sections 447,427,511 and 34 of the IPC has been registered against the accused. OC

Man held for illegal mining

Phagwara: The Mehatpur police on Thursday arrested Kuldeep Singh of Beetalan village for illegal sand mining. Investigating Officer (IO) Surjit Singh said he was at the Sangowal toll checkpoint when a vehicle loaded with sand was stopped for checking but the driver could not produce any document. The IO said a case under Section 379 and 21 of the Punjab Mining and Minerals Act had been registered against the accused. OC

Hit by tipper, elderly dies

Hoshiarpur: An elderly man died after being hit by a tipper on Thursday. Inderjit Singh of Chak Gujran village told the police that his father Sita Ram was hit by a tipper near Prabhat Chowk. He was taken to the Civil Hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead. The police have registered a case against accused driver Shambhu Rai of Bihar. oc

143 bottles of liquor seized

Hoshiarpur: The police booked four smugglers, arrested three of them and seized a large quantity of narcotics. Following a tip-off, the police raided a house in Mohalla Ramgarh and recovered 143 bottles of liquor. According to the police, alleged smuggler Lakhveer Singh escaped from the spot. The police during a naka in the area stopped two youths going on a bike and seized 10-kg poppy husk from them. The accused have been identified as Balkar Singh Akalgarh and Surinder Singh Pakhowal. The police arrested Lakhwinder Singh of Sauli village and recovered 42-gm of intoxicating powder from him. Separate cases have been registered against them. oc

Jalandhar: The Jalandhar rural police on Friday arrested three proclaimed offenders (POs), identified as Kuldip Singh, Jasveer Singh, and Sunny, wanted in cases of murder, liquor smuggling and mining, respectively. TNS

30-yr-old ends life by suicide

Phagwara: A 30-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his house in local Sugar Mills Colony on Thursday. The victim was identified as Sarwan Kumar. The police have registered a case. oc

Train runs over 17-year-old girl

Phagwara: A 17-year-old girl was run over by a train near Phillaur railway station on Thursday. The deceased, identified as Muskaan of Kali Nagar, was run over while crossing the railway lines, said the GRP. The deceased was a Class XII student. The body was handed over to the kin after autopsy.
