There were three youngsters from Nawanshahr, who were among the hundreds of US deportees. Ramandeep Singh of Ibrahimpur village in Nawanshahr is one on whose complaint, the police had registered a case against two Rajpura-based travel agents.

The 35-year-old had spent Rs 40 lakh to go to the US for which he heavily relied on loan.

Ramandeep said he wanted to go to Canada for which he approached two agents in Rajpura. “The agents told me that the visa refusal rate was high in Canada. Thus, they decided to send me to the US. In October last year, I reached the UK and from there, I was taken to Mexico,” he had said.

The day I reached Mexico, two unknown persons snatched my mobile phone and made me sit in a car. They had weapons. After crossing the border, they left me in the US,” Ramandeep, who studied till Class XII had mentioned.

Manpreet Singh from Balachaur and Taranjit Singh (19) from Pojewal had also got deported from the US.

For days, the family members remained mum on the issue. The grandfather of Taranjit when approached by the media had refused to share any detail and that he was thankful to the Almighty that his grandson had come back safely. "Don't compel me to say anything further. I am not in a condition to do so. I won't answer to any other question," he had said.

The sarpanch had also said the family was in distress and weren't in a position to talk.
