Phagwara: British Deputy High Commissioner Caroline Rowett visited Lovely Professional University (LPU), where she was greeted by vice-president of the university Dr Aman Mittal. Rowett also interacted with United Kingdom’s 16 students from the University of Greenwich studying at LPU for a month-long programme under the ‘Turing’ scheme. LPU Chancellor Dr Ashok Mittal apprised her about the continuous innovative affairs and achievements going on at the university. The ‘Turing’ scheme of the UK is a global programme for studying, working and living abroad, offering once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for personal and professional development of students. It has allowed the University of Greenwich to partner with institutions outside Europe, such as LPU, to deliver funded, short-term student mobility programmes. TNS

Two held with heroin, pistol

Jalandhar: The Jalandhar Rural police on Wednesday arrested two persons and seized 100 gm of herion, a .32 bore pistol and a live catridge from their possession. The accused have been idenfitied as Kulwinder Singh, alias Meet and Mangal Singh, alias Babbu, both residents of Talwandi village, in Kapurthala. The police said the accused were held on the basis of a complaint received on June 11. A case under Sections 61, 85 of the NDPS Act and 25A of the Arms Act has been registered against them at police station, Lohian. The police said the accused will be taken in remand after being produced in a local court. “Their involvement in other cases and from where they procure drugs will be investigated”, they added. TNS

Three arrested with intoxicants

Nawanshahr: In two different cases in Nawanshahr, cases under Section 22 of the NDPS Act have been registered. In Balachaur, a man was arrested with 100 intoxicating capsules and in Kathagarh two persons including a woman were arrested with 120 injections and 1,200 intoxicating capsules. In both the cases, the police caught the accused when the latter tried to change their way on seeing the police. Notably, on everyday basis, the cases related to drug recovery are increasing despite several claims by the government. TNS

9 principals get extra charge

Jalandhar: Nine school principals in the districts have been given extra charges of other schools. Apart from heading their own schools, these principals have been given powers of other schools as well. The issue of shortage of teachers and principals have always troubled the education department but no new recruitments are being done. Even the district is without District education officer, both secondary and primary. The deputy DEOs have been given charge of the DEOs.
