The vandalism of a statue of Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar in Nangal village, Phillaur, has triggered sharp reactions from across social and political circles. People’s groups, Dalit organisations and political leaders have unanimously condemned the act and demanded stringent action against those responsible.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, saw the glass around the statue vandalised, with Khalistan slogans written or taped across it. The secessionist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) claimed responsibility for the act. This incident follows a similar one two months ago in Amritsar, where a statue of Dr Ambedkar was also desecrated.

Political leaders across the spectrum have termed the act as a conspiracy to disturb the peace and harmony in the state. All major political parties have urged the public to stay united and resist attempts to incite division.

Jalandhar Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi condemned the attack and called it part of a larger conspiracy to destabilise the state. He stated, “We must not be swayed by such incidents. These are acts of bad elements. Ambedkar had great respect for Sikhism and we must respond with peace and love. I have spoken to the SSP and they assured me the culprits will be caught soon.”

BJP leader Vijay Sampla called for strict action against those responsible, stressing their actions were aimed at sowing discord between Hindus, Sikhs and Dalits. He added, “These reprobate elements should be sternly dealt with. They must be punished immediately.”

In-charge of the Phillaur unit of AAP, Prem Kumar, condemned the use of such derogatory words against Dr Ambedkar. He pointed out foreign elements were trying to undermine the state’s peace, urging residents to uphold unity.

BSP state president Avtar Singh Karimpuri went a step further, calling for the application of the National Security Act (NSA) against the culprits. He said national and international agencies were involved in creating communal unrest and urged the government to take stronger action to prevent future incidents.

Members of the Lok Insaaf Manch, Phillaur, also condemned the attack, calling for stern punishment for the offenders to set an example for others. They described the vandalism as an attempt to disrupt the peace in the state.
