‘Centre for Space Research with Space Mission Control Facility’ has been opened at Lovely Professional University (LPU) recently. It was inaugurated by Dr Sudhir Mishra, the man behind SuperSonic BrahMos Missile of the country. The student trainees under the centre will be engaged in satellite system design and system engineering; satellite payload and sub-system design and development; satellite assembly, integration and testing; satellite launch and operation; payload data processing and application; HAM activities; space competitions; ground station networking; and scientific extension activities.
The centre was launched during ‘Anusandhaan Samaroh’ where Dr Mishra, a distinguished scientist and director general (BrahMos), DRDO, Ministry of Defence, presided over and inaugurated the centre. LPU Chancellor Ashok Mittal has said the goal of the space mission control facility is to lower financial and engineering barriers that hinder access to science and engineering data from orbit.
The Chancellor also referred that faculty and students working at the centre will be developing their own satellite “LPUSAT-1” - a dream project. Head, research and development, LPU, Dr Geetha, said, LPU students and researchers want to communicate with the international space station, download live satellite images and receive telemetry, science/engineering data from nano-satellites and larger space-crafts. Ground station at LPU will meet this need with an internet-to-orbit gateway mission control centre available for public use. This gateway virtually connects participating internet clients around the world to a remote satellite ground station at the LPU, providing a broad community for multinational cooperation.
