“Jago”, a traditional Punjabi event that is organised during weddings, has become a part of farmers’ movement at the village level too in Nawanshahr. The aim is to awaken the government and make it realise that it is important to listen to the demands of farmers.

Gurbaksh Kaur, Punjab president of the Istri Jagriti Manch, said they recently organised “Jago” in Langroa, Bhan Majara and Usmanpur villages in the district.

“We have been getting immense support from people. We are reaching out to everyone by adopting such methods,” she said.

During the ‘Jago’, union members and women also give speeches and encourage others to provide strength to the movement.

Members associated with the farmers’ unions said the aim of taking out ‘Jago’ was to raise awareness among people, women and children and invite them to show their support to the farmers.

Jasveer Singh from the Indian Federation of Trade Union (IFTU) said such events would be held in the coming days too.

Union members associated with the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha said several meetings were being held on a daily basis. “No one wants to leave any stone unturned and the motive to join farmers and win over the government,” they said.

During the last farmers’ movement, several villages, including Sajawalpur, Pallian Khurd, Sahivaaj Pur, Jethu Majara and Majara Khurd, were covered during “Jago”.

The unions have planned to hold a massive protest outside the Deputy Commissioner office in the district tomorrow.
