With 19 golds, HMV lift inter-college overall trophy

Hans Raj Mahila Mahavidyalaya (HMV) has won the GNDU Inter-College Overall Championship Trophy 2024-25. The college has won 19 gold medals in badminton, rifle shooting, pistol shooting, volleyball, kabbadi, fencing, archery, karate, boxing, kho-kho, athletics, wrestling, judo, handball, wushu, gymnastic (f), gymnastic (a), track cycling and cricket.

The teams have also won six silver medals in taekwondo, rugby, weightlifting, rowing, canoeing and cycling and one bronze medal.

The college has also won the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Trophy and a cash prize of Rs 50,000 from the university. It is for the third consecutive year that the college has won the overall trophy. So far, it has lifted the trophy 22 times. “For 4-5 years, in between, the college could not make it to the top. Thankfully, we have completed a hat-trick this year,” said the sports faculty of the college.

The college is grooming nearly 300 sportspersons, including 150 national-level players who have been selected under the Khelo India scheme. These students get free lodging, diet and training at the campus. The college offers training in 32 sports disciplines for which it has hired 32 professionally trained coaches.

For the sports students and faculty, the day at the campus begins as early as 4.30 am. By 5 am, all students are in the ground for morning sessions.

“Some students also go for training to PAP. Kho-kho players go to Surnussi grounds and all athletes prefer training on the tracks of Government Sports College. The college has provided bicycles to the students. Some of them are even provided pick-and-drop facility by college buses,” said Ramandeep, Sports In-charge at the campus.

Some of prominent sports alumni from the college include cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur, athletes Manjit Kaur and Twinkle Chaudhary, water sports player Rajeshwari and international archer Mamtaz Khatun.

After the college won the overall trophy again, the players danced on the beats of dhol and celebrated the moment. Sports In-charge Ramandeep said trophy was the result of hard work and efforts of sports faculty and players. Sports faculty members Pragati and Gurminder Kaur were also present on the occasion.
