What are the most common eye problems affecting youngsters today, and what are their primary causes?

Myopia, digital eye strain, allergic conjunctivitis and amblyopia are the most common eye problems in youngsters today. Myopia is rising due to prolonged screen time and reduced outdoor activities, with genetics also playing a role.

Digital eye strain results from excessive screen use, causing dry eyes, headaches and blurred vision. Allergic conjunctivitis, triggered by allergens like pollen, dust and pet dander, leads to itchy, red eyes. Amblyopia or lazy eye, occurs when one eye fails to develop proper vision, often due to strabismus or significant prescription differences between the two eyes. Regular eye checkups are crucial for early detection and management.

How does excessive screen time impact eye health, and what precautions can be taken?

Excessive screen time leads to digital eye strain, causing dry eyes, blurred vision and headaches due to reduced blinking. It also accelerates myopia progression by limiting outdoor exposure, which is essential for eye health. To minimise risks, the 20-20-20 rule is recommended - every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away.

Limiting screen time, particularly in children, is crucial. The Indian Academy of Paediatrics suggests no screen time for children under two, less than an hour per day for ages 2-5 and one to two hours for ages 5-12. Blue light exposure from screens can disrupt sleep, so using night mode and adjusting brightness can help. Proper posture and ergonomic screen positioning also reduce strain and discomfort.

What are the latest advancements in treating myopia and digital eye strain?

Recent advancements in myopia treatment include SMILE PRO, an AI-driven, FDA-approved laser procedure that corrects myopia in just eight seconds, allowing patients to resume daily activities within a day. A balanced diet and healthy lifestyle choices significantly impact eye health. Consuming leafy greens, carrots, berries and omega-3-rich foods like fish, flaxseeds and walnuts supports vision and reduces eye condition risks. Vitamin A, C and E, along with zinc, are essential for eye health.

Limiting sugar and processed foods helps prevent diabetes-related vision issues. Outdoor activities also reduce myopia risk, with at least two hours of outdoor play daily recommended. Managing screen time, staying hydrated, maintaining proper posture and regular eye exams contribute to long-term eye health.
