A youth was caught red-handed while attempting to steal money from the donation box at Ashutosh Shiv Temple at Har Gobind Nagar here.

The thief was apprehended by temple priest Tarikasur Pandey and several worshippers. The young man, identified as Shiva, was using a stick coated with chewing gum to fish out money from the temple’s donation box. A total of Rs 2,200 was found from his possession.

Priest Pandey said Shiva had been frequently visiting the temple for several days. Suspicion arose when his visits coincided with decrease in the temple’s offerings.

The priest and devotees in the area decided to keep a close watch, leading to Shiva’s capture. The police confirmed that Shiva was caught with the stolen money.
