Scope in biomedical engineering
Q. I’m pursuing Biomedical Science. What subject would be best to opt for MSc.? Kindly tell me about the opportunities in the same. Will it possible for me to join the World Health Organisation?
After a degree in bio-medical science you can pursue any field of life science including pharmacy, micro-biology, forensic science, forensic medicine, zoology, or any other specialisation for M Sc. You can also consider M Sc Biotechnology with specializations in Genetics, Medical Genetics, and Epidemiology, which are essentially research-oriented specialisations with applications in various areas such as medicine and healthcare, pharmaceuticals, animal science and environment. With global players focusing on research pertaining to drugs, vaccines, diagnostics etc, there is growing requirement for skilled medical researchers, with companies developing biotech products, and large pharmaceutical firms with research facilities. There are also many research organisations/industries where highly complicated research work is being conducted such as the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Government of India National Biotechnology Board (NBTB), Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Biotechnology Consortium of India Ltd (BCIL), Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR), Defense Research Development Organization (DRDO) and others.
The WHO like other international organisations recruits candidates with high level of qualification and work experience. The WHO requires people with an advanced level university degree in medicine, public health, social sciences or other relevant areas of work and with experience at national and/or international level. After a Master’s degree in any of these life science/ medical science disciplines you would need to put in some years of work experience in a health related field relevant to WHO’s work, before applying to WHO. Such experience will not only expose you to the field of work of your choice, but also enable you to decide as to whether you should take up the course in stock markets, or require to do an MBA. If you are interested in working in financial services, stocks and securities, a short term course in the stock markets will certainly help you get a job.
