Terming the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) "undemocratic and unconstitutional", former Chief Justice of Delhi High Court AP Shah today said the student protests against it was heartening to see, as there existed an environment where institutions are being targeted and their efficacy eroded.
Delivering the fourth LC Jain Memorial Lecture this evening, Justice Shah lashed out at the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre, alleged that communal agenda of the ruling dispensation is inflicting severe harm to India's social fabric, its well-established institutions and federalism.
The government's actions were aimed at getting institutions like Reserve Bank of India, Election Commission, CBI and a few others compromise with its diktat, he said, adding every now and then “Muslims were called potential terrorists” and all dissenting voices were branded “anti-national”.
The way the Centre was trying to implement CAA, NRC)and also the way it has dealt with Bhima Koregaon case, it appeared that the federalism in the country was under severe stress, he noted.
On the situation in J&K, he lamented that even after six months since the Centre took the drastic decision with regard to the erstwhile state “no satisfactory answer has been given by the court”.
