Sixtyfive-year-old Mohan Lal Kathpal of Taraori gave a new lease of life to his 33-year-old daughter-in-law Priyanka Kathpal by donating his kidney to her at a private hospital in Mohali.

In Jul 2019, Priyanka gave birth to a pre-mature baby boy. Thereafter, she had to undergo treatment for complications and infection due to the delivery. Her blood got infected that resulted in damage to her kidney. She had to undergo dialysis on a regular basis, leading to weakness. The condition reached to such a stage that the doctors advised her for a kidney transplant.

Instantly, her father-in-law stepped up and offered his kidney to save her. The transplant took place at Ivy Hospital, Mohali, last month. Priyanka and her father-in-law reached their home two days back after a regular check-up of around one month.

Priyanka considers it to be her second birth and is thankful to her father-in-law for it.

Mohan Lal said it was a difficult time for them when they came to know about the kidney transplant. “I instantly made up my mind to offer my kidney to my daughter-in-law, who we could not allow to fall victim to this unexpected disease at such a young age. Though my son wanted to give his kidney but my wife and I did not agree due to his young age,” said Mohan Lal. Dr Raka Kaushal, director, nephrology at Ivy Hospital, said, “In most cases, we have seen that true bonds of blood and love getting tear apart in such cases. Families and friendships are broken in the hospital during tough times for someone in need. But Mohan Lal proved it otherwise.”
