Amritsar: Cabinet Minister OP Soni on Sunday inaugurated the LED street light project on Dhepai Road here. Under the project, the LED lights will be installed on the Dhepai Road, Islamabad, Haripura and Chabal roads. OP Soni said around 60,000 LED lights would be installed in the city. The government will spend Rs40 crore on the project, he added. "The lights will be equipped with a mechanism which will tell the company's software that whether these are functioning or not. Employees of the company will immediately repair the light, which will develop a snag. The firm will provide the service for five years. All 85 wards will be covered under the project." TNS
Three held with 1.52-kg heroin
Amritsar: The police on Sunday arrested three persons, including a woman, with 1.52 kg of heroin. The suspects have been identified as Ranjit Singh, alias Rana, of Daoke, Harjit Singh, alias Happy, of Guru Nanak Colony, Tarn Taran road, and his wife Mandeep Kaur. The suspects were travelling in a car when they were intercepted by a police party in the area that comes under the Chatiwind police station. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against them. SSP Vikram Jeet Duggal said the police had also seized their mobile phones. TNS
Improving breeds of livestock
Amritsar: The government has announced to provide the free artificial insemination services to livestock breeders till March 15, 2020. The objective is to help them improve breeds of their animals. DC Pardeep Sabarwal said a total of 100 villages in the district had been selected under the programme. He said 200 animals from each village would be selected under the livestock improvement programme. Sabarwal said semen centres had been stocked with frozen semen for the purpose. He added that improved breeds will help increase milk production. TNS
