Refer to ‘Amarinder stirs the Punjab pot (The Great Game); Capt Amarinder Singh is a well-read politician who is deeply conversant with the socio-economic problems of Punjab. He is the only surviving stalwart in state politics who knows the pulse of the people and is disillusioned with the political setup. The signs of fatigue in the AAP camp are visible; the ruling party is failing to meet voters’ expectations. The steady erosion of the SAD’s social and political base in Punjab has demoralised its workers. In this complex political scenario, Amarinder’s visit to the Khanna granary, with farmers waiting for their paddy crop’s timely procurement, assumes special significance. He knows well that the people in villages and cities of the state will not forget his visit in a hurry.

No hope for farmers

Apropos of ‘Amarinder stirs the Punjab pot’; the former Punjab CM’s visit is going to change the terrible situation being faced by farmers. They have to sit for days on end just to get their grain lifted and are also being paid way below the MSP. Amarinder Singh lifting a few grains from a heap of paddy won’t wipe the tears off a farmer’s face. If indeed he wants to do something, he should ask the state government why those arhtiyas who are imposing huge cuts on the MSP are not losing their licences. The day he secures for the farmers legal guarantee of the MSP for their crop from the powers that be, he would indeed have stirred the political pot.

Trudeau’s election gimmick

With reference to ‘Trudeau’s gambit’; Canada has long shone as a beacon for immigrants, thanks to its famously lenient policies. However, the surge of newcomers has precipitated an undeniable strain on essentials like healthcare, housing and employment. Even some members within Trudeau’s Liberal Party have begun to question this policy. With elections a year away, Trudeau’s worries are understandable. Yet, his blatantly unabashed support for separatist forces poses a serious threat to India. Historically, India-Canada relations have thrived, but Ottawa’s unreserved support for anti-India elements may jeopardise hopes of harmonious bilateral ties.

A series of missteps

Apopos of ‘Trudeau’s gambit’; given the current situation in the Maple Country, it is evident that the popularity of Justin Trudeau is waning. To cling to power, he is adopting tactics like patronising extremists and radicals to garner the support of a particular community. He has undermined Canada’s reputation at the international level. Nobody should have been allowed to sour the traditional cordial relations with long-standing friend India. Parents wishing to send their children to Canada should wait, weigh the pros and cons as employment and accommodation problems are acute there.

Face-saving ploy

With reference to ‘SAD’s bypoll retreat’; the Shiromani Akali Dal refraining from contesting the bypolls is no doubt a calculated decision aimed at averting an imminent debacle. Citing that Sukhbir Badal has been declared ‘tankhaiya’ is only a face-saving strategy. The SAD, once a political force to reckon with, has become a pale shadow of its former self since its rout in the 2017 and 2022 Assembly elections . It appears that the party solely may not be able to face the next Assembly elections, so it may have to take the BJP’s support.

Strengthen Akali leadership

Refer to ‘SAD’s bypoll retreat’; the party’s decision to refrain from contesting the bypolls appears to be both a calculated retreat and a move to preserve its religious integrity amidst turbulent political times. While citing religious obligations to avoid the bypolls reflects panthic loyalty, the timing suggests a strategic move. SAD’s withdrawal raises concerns about the party’s political strength and dedication to its supporters. Strengthening its leadership structure and transparency could help regain public trust and stability before the next Assembly elections.
