Muhammad Yunus’ recent address underscores a pivotal moment for India-Bangladesh relations. His call for fairness and equality as the foundation of bilateral ties is both timely and essential. As neighbours that share deep historical and cultural bonds, it is imperative that our interactions reflect mutual respect and equity. Yunus’ initiatives, including high-level talks on flood management and the revival of SAARC, underscore his commitment to regional cooperation. These steps are crucial for fostering stability and prosperity in South Asia. The interim government’s reforms, aimed at ensuring equal rights and enhancing democratic structures, further demonstrate Dhaka’s dedication to progress. It is in India's interest to support these efforts, fostering a partnership based on shared values and mutual benefit.

Harris held her own during debate

Apropos of the editorial ‘Acrimonious debate’; the televised face-off between Republican contender Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris has created a lot of buzz. Interestingly, Harris was able to hold her own in the debate. Trump, on the other hand, tried to evade the tough questions posed by the moderators. He also tried his best to get under Harris’ skin. But, much to her credit, she stood her ground, not letting him rattle her. From this point on, the election is only set to get more heated. And the world will be closely following each development in the US presidential campaigning season.

Trump was pipped at the post

Considering her late entry into the presidential race, it was not easy for Kamala Harris to find her feet on the big stage. But she seems to have gained ground. She did well in the debate to call out Trump, who often rages against illegal immigration, for killing a bipartisan border Bill. She also scored a point when she trolled Trump over his rallies, something that really stung him. When pressed on certain issues, Trump chose to avoid discussing the topic and pivoted to something else. While Harris delivered substance, Trump had nothing to offer but rhetoric and lies.

Focus on ending wars

With reference to the editorial ‘Acrimonious debate’; the matchup saw the two candidates spar over the Israel-Hamas war and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, among other issues, but neither could outline a roadmap to end the conflicts. The two presidential contenders must make more efforts to work out a solution to end the suffering of the people stuck in the war zones. Besides, they must also focus on steps to ensure the supply of humanitarian aid to the war-torn regions.

Trump not ready to face reality

Apropos of the editorial ‘Acrimonious debate’; by criticising the moderators for fact-checking him, Donald Trump is blaming the weathercock for the storm. He should not have slammed them for correcting him when he made inaccurate claims on the big stage. The fact that Kamala Harris was not fact-checked once says it all. The truth is that the former President never came to terms with the 2020 election loss. That is why he still refuses to accept that the mandate was not stolen from him.

No country for women

The Mhow gangrape case is deeply shocking. The fact that it comes barely a month after the Kolkata rape-murder horror highlights the sad state of affairs in the country. It seems like criminal elements have no fear of the law. That they don’t hesitate to commit such barbaric crimes must concern us all. It is scary to even think that these perpetrators often get off scot-free and roam around among us freely. Is there any place in this country where a woman can feel safe? Decisive action is a must to tackle such criminals.
