Clear communication, independent regulatory oversight and inclusive dialogue with citizens are crucial. Trust acts as the foundation that can transform nuclear power from a contested issue into a viable source of clean, reliable and sustainable energy.

Rev up self-reliance

Refer to ‘Resetting ties with China is mirage of stability’; re-engaging with China may offer short-term relief, but deep mistrust and unresolved border issues hinder our long-term gains. Strengthening the Production-Linked Incentive scheme, diversifying markets and building manufacturing hubs are key to reducing our reliance on China and the US. We need to act tactfully yet firmly to secure early tariff relief for vulnerable sectors such as textiles, gems and seafood. This is an opportunity to boost competitiveness through R&D, innovation, better logistics and a shift to high-value, IP-driven exports.

Buy India-made products

Apropos of ‘Govt extends duty-free cotton import till Dec amid US tariffs’; it would enhance the availability of cotton for the garment industry. This is necessary to ensure regular employment to millions of workers in the textile industry, which forms a significant share of our exports. The measure would also ease extra financial burden on garment manufacturers grappling with high domestic cotton prices and scarcity of raw material in the local market. The public must come forward and share the nation’s burden by purchasing garments manufactured in India and boycotting international brands.

Unfair remarks by US official

The remarks of White House trade adviser Peter Navarro, blaming India for the ongoing war in Ukraine, are not only misplaced but also unfair. To single out India for a conflict that has complex geopolitical roots is an oversimplification of international affairs. The Ukraine war is a consequence of longstanding tensions between Russia and NATO, where multiple global powers have played their part. India has consistently upheld the principles of diplomacy and dialogue, calling for peace and immediate cessation of hostilities. It is unfortunate that some officials in the US establishment choose to point fingers instead of acknowledging India’s independent and principled foreign policy.

Afforestation key preventive step

Apropos of ‘Year after year, Punjab drowns in mismanagement’; afforestation of catchment areas of rivers and rivulets is very important. The catchments of Punjab’s rivers fall in other states. Once the catchment areas of rivers are afforested, it will check the free runoff of water and reduce the risk of plains getting inundated. Although it is already too late, a beginning has to be made. It takes time to afforest an area. The sooner the better. Joint and sincere efforts on the part of the affected state governments are required.
