Ram temple inauguration

Rahul Gandhi and several other Opposition leaders are boycotting the Ram Mandir ceremony. They claim that it is a BJP-RSS show being organised for political gains. Ironically, these leaders are skipping the event for the same reason — political considerations. It is suggested that every invitee should attend the ceremony, rising above petty politics. The occasion holds historical significance, with people across India and Hindus worldwide eagerly awaiting the consecration. There should have been no controversy after the Supreme Court ordered the temple’s construction at the disputed site.

Religion-centric politics

Hypocrisy and opportunism have always been the hallmarks of Indian politics, which is becoming increasingly religion-centric. The laying of the foundation stone of the Ram temple by the VHP in 1989 and the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992, both during Congress rule, suggest that the party wanted to avoid appearing anti-Hindu after being labelled as pro-Muslim. The Congress had no option but to decline the invitation to the January 22 event, where it would merely seem like a cheerleader for the BJP’s aggressive Hindutva push. The politicisation of religion will persist until the Indian masses learn to vote in the elections over public issues rather than on religious/caste lines drawn by politicians.

Ensure accountability

Refer to ‘Chaos at airports’; this persistent issue, whether triggered by passenger behaviour or staff-related challenges, necessitates an urgent and systematic overhaul. A proactive strategy should prioritise addressing underlying issues, such as optimising communication channels for accurate updates and providing comprehensive stress management training for staff. The introduction of designated rest areas during delays, coupled with the establishment of clear directives from the DGCA on facilities and compensation, is essential to ensure accountability among airlines.

Uphold discipline at airport

Dense fog has significantly impacted flight operations. It’s crucial for passengers to recognise that natural events are beyond anyone’s control. The recent incident of a passenger attacking a pilot is both disgraceful and irrational. Every passenger bears a responsibility to uphold discipline at the airport. In order to manage such situations more effectively, the DGCA should establish guidelines for airports, mandating staff to provide well-informed advance notices about flight delays to all passengers, thus avoiding chaos at the last moment. Strict penalties should be enforced on any passenger violating these regulations.

Illegal migration

Apropos of ‘Donkey route risky’; while illegal migration to other countries is not a new phenomenon, the scale and nature of the incidents happening now are unprecedented. A well-established network is at play, involving touts and travel agents. The desire for a brighter future is apparent, given that the median household income of an Indian-American family is $1,30,000 per annum. It is imperative for the authorities to reflect on why Indians are compelled to risk both money and lives to seek opportunities abroad. A thorough crackdown on those encouraging and facilitating such illegal activities is essential to curb this trend.

Turmoil in Myanmar

Refer to ‘Myanmar chaos poses challenges for India’; the article rightly concludes that the chaos caused by the military junta in Myanmar presents two significant challenges to India. Firstly, it amplifies Chinese influence in our immediate vicinity, and secondly, it poses a threat to the vulnerable and disturbed state of Manipur. While China strategically manoeuvres the turmoil in Myanmar to its advantage, India appears complacent. China is posing a challenge to India’s foreign policy in our immediate vicinity. Starting with Nepal, followed by the Maldives, Sri Lanka and now Myanmar, the situation appears to be slipping from our control. Our policymakers must promptly address and counteract these challenges.
